A man at the marina told me to quit my morning walk. He watched me favor my knee and shook his head. He said every step was grinding the joint down. He meant well. For a week I believed him. I cut my walk in half. My knee did not thank me. It got stiffer, not looser. So I did what Carol taught me to do. I stopped guessing and looked up the numbers. The sitters had more arthritis than the runnersA 2017 analysis in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy pooled studies covering more than 114,000 people. Recreational runners had hip or knee arthritis about 3.5% of the time. People who were sedentary had it about 10.2% of the time. Only the elite, high-mileage runners came in higher, at 13.3%. This is observational, so it shows a strong link rather than final proof. But it points the same way as the rest of the week’s evidence. Walking and easy running did not wear knees out. Sitting still tracked with far more arthritis. |
