LIVE WELL · THURSDAY The Four-to-One Rule Your Knees Wish You KnewThree daily habits that cut hundreds of pounds of force off a sore knee, no gym required. |

My friend Dave has a leather couch that sits about fourteen inches off the floor. It looks great. But last Thanksgiving, after two hours of football and pie, I tried to stand up from it and my right knee said no. Not a sharp pain. More of a deep, grinding refusal. Carol had to pull me up by both hands while Dave pretended not to notice. That night I looked up why. And the answer came down to math. The deeper your knee bends, the harder your thigh muscle has to pull. On a low seat, your knee bends past ninety degrees. The force on the joint goes up fast. On a higher seat, your knee stays closer to a gentle angle. Less bend, less force, less of that grinding refusal. But the real number that stopped me was from a 2005 study at Wake Forest. Researchers weighed 142 older adults with knee arthritis, then measured the force on their knees as they walked. They found that for every single pound of body weight lost, the knee felt four pounds less force per step. One pound off you, four pounds off your knee. That is the four-to-one rule. The researchers then did the math for a mile of walking, roughly 1,200 steps per knee. Lose just one pound and your knee absorbs about 4,800 fewer pounds of total force over that mile. Lose ten pounds and that is 48,000 pounds less per mile. I read that number three times. |

Surgery Won’t Fix Your Leaky Bladder (But This 7-Second Ritual Will)
My name is Dr. Sarah Pachtman Shetty and I want you to know that you’ve been lied to when it comes to pee leaks.
Let’s bust some myths:
❌ “It's normal after kids/getting older.”
It's COMMON, not normal. And common means it can be fixed.
❌ “You need surgery to fix it.”
Surgery is expensive, scary, and doesn’t really fix the root cause.
❌ “You just have a small bladder, it must run in the family.”
No it doesn’t. That’s just an excuse doctors make up to avoid treating you.
Your bladder CAN be reset in just 7 seconds a day. You don’t need invasive surgery, annoying kegels or toxic pills.
I made a free video showing you exactly how:

THIS WEEK’S QUICK WINS Three Knee-Friendly Habits for Today |
The IDEA Trial: Diet Plus Exercise Beats Either AloneIn the Intensive Diet and Exercise for Arthritis (IDEA) trial, Stephen Messier and colleagues at Wake Forest followed 454 overweight and obese adults aged 55 and older with knee arthritis for 18 months. All had pain and X-ray evidence of knee damage. The group that combined calorie reduction with exercise had less pain and better function than those who did diet or exercise alone, and both diet groups had lower IL-6 levels (a marker of joint swelling). The results were published in JAMA in 2013. Small, steady weight loss is the single biggest lever most people have for reducing daily knee pain. The effect is not one-to-one. It is four-to-one. |
