TODAY’S MOVE The Slow StandA kitchen chair, three seconds down, three seconds up. Your thigh does the work. Your knee gets the benefit. |

Last spring I watched my neighbor Jim try to get out of a plastic lawn chair. He put both hands on the armrests, rocked forward, and pushed. Nothing. He rocked again, harder, and made it up on the second try. Jim is 71. His knees are stiff. But the thing that struck me was not the stiffness. It was that his thighs could not do the job. The quadriceps is the big muscle on the front of your thigh. It straightens your knee when you stand. And in people with knee arthritis, it tends to shrink. A study out of Indiana University (Slemenda et al., published in the Annals of Internal Medicine) measured thigh strength in 462 older adults. The ones with knee arthritis had quads about 20 percent weaker than those without it. The surprise: the weakness showed up even before pain did. In other words, the muscle fades before the knee starts hurting. That matters, because the quad is the knee’s main shock absorber. When it’s strong, it soaks up force. When it’s weak, the cartilage takes the hit. But the quad responds to training at any age. And the simplest quad exercise I know uses a piece of furniture you already sit on ten times a day. |

QUIZ: Which sitting position is destroying your sciatic nerve?
Stop what you're doing right now and take note of how you’re sitting…
According to nerve health researcher Dr. Mark Ellwood from the Sciatica Support Institute, sitting in this common position causes more sciatic flare-ups than all other positions combined.
The result? Millions of Americans unknowingly compress their sciatic nerve for 8+ hours a day, turning minor discomfort into debilitating pain that shoots down their leg like lightning.
Think you know which sitting position is the #1 WORST for people with sciatica?

THIS WEEK’S QUICK WINS Three small knee habits for this week |
Weak Thighs, Sore Knees: What 139 Trials FoundThe 2024 Cochrane review (Lawford et al.) is the largest review of exercise for knee arthritis ever published. It pooled 139 randomized trials and over 12,000 people. The finding: exercise improved pain, physical function, and quality of life in the short term. Separately, an updated meta-analysis by Øiestad and colleagues in the British Journal of Sports Medicine pooled 11 studies and 46,819 adults. They confirmed that weak quadriceps raise the odds of developing knee arthritis by roughly 40 percent in men and up to 85 percent in women. Quad strength is a modifiable risk factor for knee arthritis. A slow sit-to-stand is one of the safest ways to build it. |
