Back to the hands, and to the half of hand strength that gets forgotten entirely.

There is a pair of stiff leather work gloves in my shed that I fought with for a solid ten minutes last week. Not because my hands were weak. Because I could not get my fingers to spread wide enough and flat enough to slide in. I ended up prying each finger in with the other hand, like a man packing a suitcase.
That got me thinking. Think about everything your hands did today. Held a mug, turned a key, carried a bag, gripped a rail. Every one of those is closing. Now name one thing that made your hand open against resistance. I could not think of a single one either.
So half the hand gets a workout every day, and the other half gets nothing for decades. Here is how to even that up.

Find a thin rubber band |
A plain office rubber band is all you need. Start thin. If it feels tight straightaway, it is too strong, so find a looser one or double up a very slack one.

Loop it around your fingers |
Rest your hand on a table, palm down. Slip the band around all four fingers and your thumb, near the middle knuckles, so it holds them loosely together.
ⓘ Easier version: use the band around just two fingers at a time.

Spread slowly against it |
Open your fingers and thumb apart, stretching the band. Take a count of two going out. Hold for two seconds at the widest comfortable point.
ⓘ You should feel this on the back of the hand and up the forearm.

Do not let the band snap your fingers shut. Bring them back in over a count of three. Do 10 on each hand, once or twice a day.
ⓘ Skip any joint that is hot or swollen today, and come back to it another day.

THE WHY |
Why opening matters as much as gripping |
Your hand works like a pair of opposing teams. One set of muscles closes the fingers. Another set opens them. Doctors call those the flexors and the extensors, which just means the benders and the straighteners. |
Ordinary life loads only one team. Every mug, doorknob, and shopping bag trains the benders. The straighteners only ever open your hand into thin air, against nothing at all. Over years, one side stays busy and the other quietly fades. Hand therapists call the extensors the neglected muscles, and that is exactly why. |
You feel the result in odd places. Getting a hand into a glove. Spreading your fingers to palm a wide bowl. Laying your hand flat on a table. Fanning out a hand of cards. None of those are gripping tasks, and none of them improve when you squeeze a ball. |
There is a second reason to bother. A balanced hand tends to work more smoothly, and the research on hand training found its biggest effect not on raw strength but on dexterity, the fine control you use for buttons and keys. In other words, this is less about power and more about your hands doing as they are told. |
Where the muscles actually live |
One thing worth knowing. Most of the muscle that moves your fingers is not in your fingers. It sits in your forearm, and pulls on the fingers through long cords called tendons. That is why you feel this exercise up your forearm, and why the whole arm is really part of the hand. |

⚠ WHEN TO STOP
When to stop and call your doctor
These are uncommon, but they are signals to get checked rather than exercise through:
● A finger joint that is hot, red, and very swollen, especially with a fever.
● A finger that will not straighten on its own, or catches and then snaps straight.
● Numbness or tingling in the fingers, especially waking you at night, or a hand that is losing strength.

Put a rubber band in a saucer next to the coffee maker. Ten spreads each hand while it brews, and you have done the day’s work before breakfast.

Older hands tend to squeeze harder than a task needs, which tires them out. Notice how hard you are holding the steering wheel or the phone, and let it loosen a little.

A minute under warm running water before you start, the same as we did in July. Warm hands spread further and complain less, so the exercise goes better.

Older hands gained the most
A 2025 review pooled 22 randomized trials covering 1,017 people and looked at what hand-focused training actually delivers. Grip strength improved by a small to moderate amount. Dexterity, the fine control behind buttons and keys, improved a great deal. And the effect was clearly larger in older adults than in younger ones, which is worth knowing if you have been told this sort of thing is for the young. Two honest notes. Pinch strength improved on average, but not enough to call the result solid. And the reviewers flagged that many of the trials were at risk of bias, so hold the numbers loosely and the direction firmly.

The gentle pinch
In July, many of you said buttons, zippers, and keys were the hardest jobs. Those are all pinching, which is a different skill from gripping. Here is how to train it.
| 1. | Take a soft sponge, a piece of therapy putty, or a folded washcloth. |

| 2. | Pinch it between the pad of your thumb and the side of your index finger. Hold 3 seconds. |

| 3. | Release, then work round each finger in turn. Five with each, both hands. |

If the base of your thumb is the sore spot, ask a hand therapist first. Hard pinching can aggravate that particular joint.

Opening and spreading The neglected one, and today’s job. Nothing in daily life loads it, so it needs a band or nothing at all. Costs pennies. |
Gripping Already trained by daily life, and helped further by a soft ball squeeze. Grip is the measure most linked to staying independent, so it is worth keeping. |
Pinching The one behind buttons, keys, and zippers. Weak pinch tracks with everyday difficulty, though the trial evidence for training it is thinner than for grip. Low risk to try. |

There are no muscles in your fingers at all. The muscles that bend and straighten them sit in your palm and forearm, pulling on the bones through long cords. Wiggle your fingers and watch your forearm. You can see the machinery working from a distance.
