LIVE WELL The $140 Walking Shoes Sitting in My ClosetA six-month trial found cushioned soles did no better than flat ones for hip pain. |

There is a pair of $140 walking shoes in my closet that I have not touched in months. I bought them last spring at a shoe store in Maine. My back had been giving me trouble for two years by then, and the salesman talked about "motion control," which means a stiff sole that stops your foot from rolling in. The pitch included arch support, too, a ridge built up under the middle of the foot. All of it, he said, would guard my joints from back to hips to knees. I wore them on my morning walk for three months. They felt fine. Not bad, not great. My back and hips felt the same as before. Carol asked one night if those shoes were doing a thing. I had no good answer. So I did what I always do. I went to the studies. I found a 2026 trial called SCHIPP. That stands for Shoes for self-managing Chronic Hip Pain. Paterson and a team in Australia ran it and published it in the Annals of Internal Medicine. They enrolled 120 people with hip osteoarthritis, which is wear on the smooth lining inside the hip joint. Half wore cushioned shoes with thick, stiff soles. The other half wore flat flexible shoes, the kind that bend in your hand. After six months, pain scores were nearly the same. The gap was half a point on an 11-point scale. That is not close to a real difference. |

Surgery Won’t Fix Your Leaky Bladder (But This 7-Second Ritual Will)
My name is Dr. Sarah Pachtman Shetty and I want you to know that you’ve been lied to when it comes to pee leaks.
Let’s bust some myths:
❌ “It's normal after kids/getting older.”
It's COMMON, not normal. And common means it can be fixed.
❌ “You need surgery to fix it.”
Surgery is expensive, scary, and doesn’t really fix the root cause.
❌ “You just have a small bladder, it must run in the family.”
No it doesn’t. That’s just an excuse doctors make up to avoid treating you.
Your bladder CAN be reset in just 7 seconds a day. You don’t need invasive surgery, annoying kegels or toxic pills.
I made a free video showing you exactly how:

THIS WEEK’S QUICK WINS Three Ways to Lighten the Load on Your Hip |
Cushioned Shoes Did Not Beat Flat Ones for Hip PainPaterson and colleagues asked each person in the SCHIPP trial to wear their assigned shoes for at least six hours a day, every day, for six months. Most did. Ninety-seven percent of the 120 participants finished the trial, which is a high completion rate for a footwear study. Both groups reported less hip pain by the end. But the cushioned group scored only 0.5 points better on an 11-point scale, a gap too small to rule out chance. The trial was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2026. Flat flexible shoes matched cushioned ones for hip pain, so fit and comfort may matter more than price and structure. |
